Leimer secures Rapax seat

Fabio Leimer has completed a deal with GP2 champion team Rapax, as predicted by AUTOSPORT magazine, after flying in testing for the squad last week

Rapax, created from the sometime Piquet Sports outfit, took Pastor Maldonado to the GP2 drivers' title this year and also fended off previous category giants Addax and ART to take the teams' championship.

The team's managing director Andrea Bergamini said Leimer had made a big impression when he tested for Rapax over four days in Abu Dhabi and was quickest in most of the sessions.

"We've been following him for a while, and he dominated the 2009 Formula Master championship," said Bergamini. "In the recent test at Abu Dhabi he gave proof of [his] talent by clocking some extremely fast lap times, and he had a truly professional approach in dealing with the team's technical staff.

"This deal represents a huge step for Rapax in an attempt to try and be back at the top next season."

Leimer contested both GP2 Asia and the main GP2 Series with Ocean this year. Although he was only 19th in the main championship, he won the sprint race at Catalunya.

"I am proud and happy that I have signed with Rapax for my second year in GP2 and am excited that they have placed their trust in me," said the 21-year-old from Switzerland.

"I know the team are fully committed to winning the championship again in 2011 and I will do all I can from my side to help them achieve this."
