BMW ruling makes Muller champion
Yvan Muller has been crowned the World Touring Car champion after his Chevrolet team's appeal against BMW over the gearboxes that Andy Priaulx and August Farfus used at Okayama was successful
Chevrolet had complained to the FIA about the BMW duo using sequential gearboxes at the Japanese event, after the German manufacturer made advantage of the homologated units originally brought in to allow Alex Zanardi to use hand controls.
The FIA International Court of Appeal agreed with Chevrolet's views that the gearboxes could not be used - despite the ruling of stewards at the event that they could be.
It stripped both BMW drivers of their points earned at the event, which means that Priaulx cannot now score enough points in this weekend's season finale in Macau to overhaul Muller.
The appeal outcome also means that former British Touring Car champion Colin Turkington and his WSR BMW team pick up victory in Okayama race two due to the removal of the RBM BMWs from the results.
