Kubica surprised Alonso is in front

Robert Kubica says he is surprised that Fernando Alonso has taken the lead of the world championship standings - because his rivals Red Bull Racing have the quicker car

Although Red Bull Racing has secured 14 pole positions out of the 17 races held so far this season, it is Alonso who holds the current advantage with just two races to go.

And Kubica said that judging by the overall pace of the cars throughout the campaign, he did not expect Alonso to hold the edge.

"I am a bit surprised that they [Ferrari] are in front because Red Bull was definitely the quickest car by far throughout all the season," said Kubica.

"But for different reasons Ferrari is in front. So that means they have done globally a better job, but the season is still not finished.

"Definitely Korea changed completely the situation for both Ferrari and Fernando. I think they have enough experience and they will for sure not make it an easy job for Red Bull, but definitely Red Bull is the quickest car throughout all the season so it will be quite an interesting battle."

Kubica ultimately thinks that Red Bull Racing's troubles have helped deliver a better season - because if the team had repeated its qualifying form in the races it would have wrapped up the championship at the Belgian Grand Prix.

"It is good for F1, good for everybody, although I assume it is not so good for the guys who have been in the quickest car because it means they could have won the championship earlier," explained Kubica.

"If you take the qualifying positions and you give the points for this, then the season would be over by Spa. But that is not the case - and that is better for F1, better for the fans, and better for the show to have a lot of drivers still in the fight until this point of the season."

And Kubica believes that the 11-point advantage that Alonso holds is psychologically important at this stage of the season.

"It is always some comfortable advantage, you can see what is going on, and the ones who are behind they have always a harder job because they have to finish ahead of the guy who is leading the championship," he said.

"For the guy leading the championship it is not necessary that he has to finish in front of them, so I think everybody will prefer to be in the lead rather than second or third."
