Chevrolet lodges appeal over gearbox
Chevrolet has officially lodged its appeal against a decision by FIA race stewards to allow the RBM BMWs to run sequential gearboxes in the World Touring Car Championship
The cars of Andy Priaulx and Augusto Farfus, along with the independent entry of Franz Engstler, were allowed to switch from five-speed H-pattern units for the Japanese race after taking advantage of a homologation originally brought in to allow Alex Zanardi to race with hand controls.
The BMWs were given a 30kg weight break as a result of the change, making them 25kg lighter than the works Chevrolets and 45kg lighter than the SEAT Leon TDIs. The independent BMW of Franz Engstler also switched.
Chevrolet Europe motorsport chief Eric Neve told AUTOSPORT: "The appeal has been lodged through the British ASN [the MSA] and we hope to have it heard next Friday in Paris. That has yet to be confirmed to us though."
Until the hearing the results of the Okayama round - including Farfus's win in race two - remain provisional.
