Wilks to rejoin for final day
Skoda GB driver Guy Wilks will restart the second day of the Rally of Scotland, where he will be joined by fellow superally returnees Alister McRae and Keith Cronin
Wilks' hopes of back-to-back wins on his home round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge disappeared with transmission problems on the first stage out of service this afternoon. The Darlington driver had been leading at the time.
"The car didn't feel right when we were pulling up a hill not far into the stage," said WIlks. "About six kilometres further into the stage, there were a couple of hairpins, coming out of the second one I floored it and there was a big bang and lots of understeers. Whatever had been going, went there and left us in front-wheel drive."
Wilks cruised to the end of the test and called it a day.
"We'd got two more stages to do this afternoon and we were going to lose a load of time stuck in front-wheel drive," he said. "Also, there was a danger of doing more damage to the car, or something breaking when we were at high speed. Stopping was, unfortunately, the only real option.
"This is so disappointing. We made a mistake this morning and dropped time - in fairness, I thought our rally might have ended there, but we were leading and we could have won this event."
There was more trouble for the Proton team after McRae retired with an alternator problem on Errochty and Cronin went out later in the day when, after stopping to check a suspect power steering problem, his co-driver Barry McNulty dropped his time cards. Without the necessary paperwork, the team were unable to continue.
