Grapevine: Rankings: Alonso climbs up to sixth

After vaulting long-time leader Jenson Button to take his third win of the season, the Ferrari driver gained three places, moving past McLaren driver Button (7) and IndyCar title rivals Will Power (8) and Dario Franchitti (9) in the process.

The highest-placed mover this week was Red Bull driver Mark Webber, who overhauled World Rally Championship leader Sebastien Loeb for second place in the Castrol Rankings after finishing sixth at Monza.
Webber now trails his Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel, whose fourth place in Italy ensured that he kept the Castrol Rankings top spot for a 25th consecutive week.

Lewis Hamilton may have lost the lead of the World Championship after crashing on the opening lap at Monza, but he retained his fourth place ahead of NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson, who was third at Richmond.

The biggest climber in the Castrol Rankings top 100 was Petter Solberg (27), who made up 13 places after finishing as runner-up on Rally Japan. The man who beat him to victory - Sebastien Ogier (15) - climbed five spots himself. Kimi Raikkonen (68) crashed out on the final morning and slipped 23 spots.

A fine move on Allan McNish (259) for the lead of the AUTOSPORT 1000km at Silverstone gave Anthony Davidson (326) and his Peugeot co-driver Nicolas Minassian (303) victory in what was the final round of the Le Mans Series. Both gained over 140 places.

Twelfth place in the GT2 class was no help to AF Corse Ferrari driver Giancarlo Fisichella (154), who lost 54 places as his score from last year's Belgian GP was discarded.

Pastor Maldonado sealed the GP2 title despite not winning either race at Monza, while victories for Christian Vietoris (92) and first time winner Sam Bird (73) elevated both by at least 10 places.

There was title success too for ART driver Esteban Gutierrez (96), who became GP3 Champion at the same time as gaining eight places. Robert Wickens (113) won the second race and climbed 22 spots himself.

Nick Tandy (420) climbed 80 spots as he won the Porsche Supercup finale at Monza, but could not take the title. That instead went to Rene Rast (401), who dropped 39 places by finishing fourth.

Mitch Evans (695) and Ben Barker (729) shared the Australian F3 wins between them at Eastern Creek while the Sud-Am series victories went to Yann Cunha (567) and Fabio Machado (1118).
