Renault undecided on F-duct for Monza

Renault remains undecided about its F-duct plans for the Italian Grand Prix, despite the concept having delivered a big step forward in performance for the team at Spa

The Enstone-based outfit got itself back on the podium in Belgium a fortnight ago thanks to the speed boost provided by the F-duct, but the team had not been sure about running it at Monza because of the low downforce nature of the track.

And with just a few days to go before practice, Renault technical director James Allison says the outfit will keep its options open ahead of the weekend.

"Monza is very different from all the other circuits and so we have had to prepare a bespoke package that we will not use anywhere else," he said.

"Monza has such long straights and so few corners that it requires much smaller wings than any other track. To add further complication, the F-duct is a potential alternative option for Monza.

"Like several other teams, we too are evaluating whether we can make the device work in the particular, low-downforce environment of Monza."

Even if the team does not use its F-duct at Monza, Allison is confident that Renault can show well.

"Monza is very different from the mainstream bunch of tracks that make up the calendar, but generally speaking the cars that are good at one track tend to be good everywhere, regardless of the downforce levels," he said.

"The performance of the R30 in Spa therefore gives me confidence that we can compete for similarly good results at all the remaining tracks, including Monza. We will be aiming to get both cars well inside the top ten both in qualifying and the race this weekend."
