Stoneman closes on title with victory

Dean Stoneman is within reach of the Formula 2 title after clinching his sixth win of the season at Oschersleben on Sunday

The 20-year-old Briton cruised to an unchallenged victory, while title rival Jolyon Palmer failed to score in 12th place.

Stoneman will head to the Valencia season finale in two weeks' time 31 points clear with 50 available.

Nicola de Marco looked set to follow Stoneman home in second place, but broke down at the first corner with just three laps remaining. That promoted Kazim Vasiliauskas to second and Sergei Afanasiev to third.

Kelvin Snoeks, Benjamin Bailly and Mihai Marinescu completed the top six in a largely eventless race.

Palmer had made good progress on the first lap, climbing from his 14th grid spot to 10th. But he struggled to create an opportunity to overtake Ivan Samarin around the twisty German circuit.

He eventually drew alongside with a run down the start/finish straight and took the inside for Turn 1. But he overshot the corner and ran through the gravel. He rejoined but down in 13th place, which later became 12th when de Marco dropped out.
