Mortara takes Zandvoort win

Edoardo Mortara cruised to his fifth victory of the season in the first Formula 3 Euro Series race of the weekend at Zandvoort

The championship leader led comfortably from pole position at the start, and was able to ease away from Valtteri Bottas. The Finn closed up again in the last few laps, but only as Mortara took it easy to the finish.

Bottas was able to snatch second from Marco Wittmann at the start. The ART driver then spent the entire race keeping the German at bay. Wittmann never really launched a serious attack, but he did have a look down the inside a couple of times into the first corner.

The top three finished the race 15 seconds clear of the battle for fourth, which was led by a hobbling Alexander Sims.

The British driver battled an ill-handling car for the entire race after colliding with Laurens Vanthoor at the start. Sims was able to hold off Roberto Merhi for fourth, but Vanthoor dropped down to eighth due to a quick 360-degree spin.

The Belgian then moved up a place on lap 12, when Daniel Juncadella went off from sixth place and beached himself in a gravel trap.

That minor shuffle in the order promoted Antonio Felix da Costa - a first-time winner last time out at the Nurburgring - into eighth and pole position for Sunday.
