Wilks set to confirm Czech comeback

Guy Wilks expects his doctor to sign him off to return to Intercontinental Rally Challenge competition next week

The Skoda driver is scheduled to return to the IRC on Barum Czech Rally Zlin at the end of the month, which will be his first time in a rally car since he fractured two vertebrae in a Rally d'Italia crash at the start of June. He has returned to his normal training regime, but goes back to his doctor next week for a final x-ray.

"The doctor is really pleased with the way the fractures have healed," Wilks told AUTOSPORT. "Basically I'm ready to be signed off as fully fit next week. I'm there already really, he's told me to get back to training and we'll have a look at another x-ray next week.

"Although slightly less intensively, I'm back training in the way I was before the accident, except for the running - I'm not doing quite as much of that as I would have been because of the impact nature. Having taken all of this time making sure the injuries are healed perfectly, I'm not about to do something silly which would jeopardise everything now. I feel absolutely fine myself - and really ready to get back into a rally car."

When he does return, he will come back to a new car: the Fabia S2000 Facelift.

"I'm going to test the car either the week before Barum or early in the week of the event," said Wilks. "I really can't wait to get back in there. It's been a long time without driving and it'll be fantastic for me to get back in the car. I want to get back in and start giving Skoda some return on the investment they have made in the programme this season - that's my priority."

Despite having missed the last three IRC rounds, Wilks is still fourth in the championship standings, 29 points behind series leader Juho Hanninen and one ahead of fellow British driver Kris Meeke.
