Rankings: Alonso climbs into top 10

Fernando Alonso is the hero of ValenciaFernando Alonso took advantage of some dismal results for IndyCar men Ryan Briscoe and Scott Dixon to move into the top 10 of the Castrol Rankings for the first time.

Briscoe finished two laps down at the Canadian street circuit after being spun out of the top six by Graham Rahal, while Dixon retired after a collision with Ryan Hunter-Reay.

With both drivers defending strong results from the 2009 event, both had sizeable drops in their Castrol Rankings scores. While Dixon retained his 10th place, Briscoe dropped two spots to 11th.

That allowed Spaniard Alonso to overtake both of them, even though the Ferrari F1 driver was not in action. He now lies ninth.

Sebastian Vettel retained his number one spot for a 17th consecutive week, but could be overhauled by second-placed Lewis Hamilton at this weekend's German Grand Prix.

The highest-placed movement came from IndyCar Champion Dario Franchitti (8). A fine second place at Toronto did not match his victory there last year and dropped him one place behind Ford WRC driver Mikko Hirvonen (7).

Peugeot Portugal driver Bruno Magalhaes (161) made up 82 spots by winning the latest round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge on Rally Azores, but a final stage crash for Skoda's Jan Kopecky (96) dropped him 20 places.

Wins for World Touring Car Championship leader Yvan Muller (74) and Andy Priaulx (72) at Brands Hatch made them seven and five places respectively while British Touring Car Champion Colin Turkington's (316) superb pair of podiums gained him over 100 spots.

Dean Stoneman (197) gained 70 places after winning in F2 at the same circuit while Philipp Eng (201) made up 20 spots by taking victory in the second race.

British F3 Championship leader Jean-Eric Vergne (167) continued his charge up the Castrol Rankings with a win at Rockingham. He has gained over 1000 places since April. Daniel McKenzie (375) and Felipe Nasr (694) were first-time winners.
