Schumacher happier with car updates

Michael Schumacher is cautiously optimistic about the performance of his Mercedes car following Friday's practice for the British Grand Prix

Although the German driver and his Mercedes team endured a miserable race in Valencia two weeks ago, Schumacher said the updates introduced there seemed to be working better around Silverstone.

The seven-time champion posted the sixth quickest time of the day today and is hopeful of a stronger weekend.

"Looking at where we are right now it does look like it," said Schumacher when asked by AUTOSPORT if the team had made progress with the updates.

"But then in Valencia's free practice we didn't look that bad either and finally it didn't look too good. But let's see what happens tomorrow. The guys have worked hard and I hope we sort of position ourselves well."

Schumacher said he was enjoying the new Silverstone layout, but admitted he was hoping for more overtaking areas.

"It's an interesting part, certainly, but it's a shame they couldn't introduce any overtaking [places]. But otherwise it's very fluid, very fast. A little bit bumpy in one or two places."
