Stoneman dominates at Portimao

Dean Stoneman clawed a little ground back on Jolyon Palmer in the Formula 2 title race by beating his main rival to victory in the second race at Portimao

Stoneman started alongside Palmer on the front row and dived down the inside for the lead at Turn 1. Thereafter, Stoneman romped away to win by more than four seconds, while Palmer seemed to struggle for pace and was more concerned about fighting off attentions from behind.

Nicola de Marco and Benjamin Bailly retained their third and fourth starting spots throughout the race. Bailly heaped the pressure on de Marco but could never get close enough to threaten - then himself closed up on Palmer in the final laps but to no avail.

Mihai Marinescu and Will Bratt came through from their ninth and eighth grid positions to complete the top six, following some first lap drama that mixed up the order behind the leaders.

Jack Clarke and Kelvin Snoeks collided, both retiring on the spot, while Armaan Ebrahim and Kazim Vasiliauskas were also eliminated on the first lap and Benjamin Lariche was delayed after an off at Turn 2.

Philipp Eng made his way up to seventh from 12th following his grid penalty. The Austrian passed Ivan Samarin and Natalia Kowalska on the opening lap and Sergei Afanasiev soon after. He briefly nosed ahead of Bratt for sixth but didn't hold the place for long.

Afanasiev and Portugal-born Ricardo Teixeira both spun off a couple of laps before the end, with the Russian nearly wiping out the previously stranded car of Plamen Kralev.
