De Angelis to sub for Aoyama

Alex de Angelis will make his MotoGP return at the German Grand Prix later this month after agreeing a deal with the Interwetten Honda squad

The San Marinese rider, who has competed for the Scot squad in Moto2 this season, will race in the top class until Interwetten's regular rider Hiroshi Aoyama recovers from the injuries he sustained in a warm-up crash at the recent British Grand Prix.

"This is a very good chance for me and I am very happy," said de Angelis. "It is a great team and I can make a return to MotoGP thanks to this opportunity. I will compete for four or five races and have enough time to improve the settings and my feeling for the bike, so it is possible to have some good results, even though it will be very difficult.

"I will do my best not to disappoint the team. I like all the tracks that are coming now and had success on each of them and I am looking forward for this new challenge."

De Angelis, 26, has a single grand prix win to his name, achieved in the 250cc World Championship at Valencia in 2006. He spent two years in MotoGP in 2008-'09, starting 35 races, and scored a best finish of second at Indianapolis in the latter season on a Gresini Honda.

Aoyama's replacement for the past two races, Kosuke Akiyoshi, will return to his role as test rider for HRC.

Interwetten team owner Daniel Epp said that he expects Aoyama to return to action in time for the Aragon Grand Prix in September. De Angelis will return to Moto2 then.
