Rahal looking for full-time team return

Bobby Rahal admits that he wants to bring his Rahal Letterman Racing team back to the IndyCar Series full-time

The double IndyCar champion and long-time team owner has entered a car for his son Graham in Sunday's Indianapolis 500 - he will start seventh on the grid.

Rahal currently runs BMW's factory GT2 programme in the American Le Mans Series, but revealed to AUTOSPORT that he harbours a return to the IRL fulltime alongside his sportscar programme, having withdrawn from IndyCars at the end of 2008 because of a lack of funding.

"I want to do the whole year again," he said. "I like the sportscar stuff but I like this too and I want to do both."

Asked whether he would like to run a car for Graham, who has only driven three races so far this year, Rahal replied: "There are a number of the top teams that are showing interest in him so I would love to see him with us, but most of all I would like to see him in a top ride."

Speaking of his RLR's chances of success at Indianapolis this weekend Rahal remained confident, despite accepting that his team is ring rusty.

"I think there are a lot of experienced people in our team, and we can do very well," he said. "We have finished in the top five something like thirty percent of our time here. There is a lot of experience and our pit crew is certainly one of the best. They are all the same guys.

"The chief mechanic was Buddy Rice's and we have got probably two or three guys that worked with Rice, Danica Patrick and Ryan Hunter-Reay. The guy who is going to call the race strategy wise has been with me since '91 - Scott Roembke. I think he is one of the best going."
