Schumacher welcomes SC clarification

Michael Schumacher has welcomed the move by the FIA to improve the safety car rules following his last-lap punishment in Monaco for overtaking Fernando Alonso

Schumacher grabbed sixth place from Alonso at the last corner, after thinking that the regulations meant he could overtake before the start-finish line because the safety car had driven into the pits.

However, the FIA stewards insisted that Schumacher had broken the rules and that overtaking was not allowed at all - even though the safety car had come into the pits.

Although Schumacher's Mercedes GP withdrew its plans to appeal the decision, the FIA also agreed to issue a clarification about the safety car rules as well as changing the system of post-race punishments.

Speaking in Turkey, during his first public appearance since the incident, Schumacher said he was keen to move on from the Monaco events - but happy the FIA had reacted.

"There is no point to get into past incidents," said Schumacher. "But the point is that if I understand the situation correctly, the FIA has identified something that happened in Monaco and they want to improve the situation.

"That is something good for the sport and I am quite happy for this to happen."

Schumacher said he had no hesitation in diving past Alonso at the final corner - with the team having instructed him that he was racing once the safety car was in the pits.

"I was told obviously by the team," he said. "From my side, I checked everything I could internally from driving the car for that particular move."
