Magnussen wins on Euro Series debut

The McLaren-backed 17-year-old son of ex-grand prix driver Jan Magnussen took a comfortable victory, after grabbing the lead from reversed grid pole-sitter Nicolas Marroc at the start.

While Marroc held off the challenge of Laurens Vanthoor and Valtteri Bottas for the entire race, Magnussen was able to cruise away into the distance, eventually winning by 10 seconds after backing off in the closing stages.

The battle for second never really developed into a proper scrap, as while Vanthoor and Bottas were on the tail of Marroc throughout, there was never a genuine attempt at a pass between the three of them.

Bottas made up good ground having started seventh on the grid. He gained a place by passing team-mate Alexander Sims at the start, and then benefited when Roberto Merhi and Antonio Felix da Costa clashed at the first corner, forcing both to retire.

Sims, running fifth, was unable to keep with the cars ahead of him, and after running wide at the first corner on lap 11 something appeared to fall off of his car.

After that, he just had to keep championship leader Edoardo Mortara behind and, despite the Signature driver occasionally weaving around behind him in the closing stages, he didn't really have to defend too much.
