Buurman: Brake glitch cost me pole

AC Milan's Yelmer Buurman blamed a brake problem for costing him a shot at his first-ever Superleague Formula pole position at Magny-Cours on Saturday

Instead, he will start second, alongside Tottenham's Craig Dolby, who made a four-tenths of a second reversal over his rival in the closing corners of the head-to-head shootout final.

"It's great to start from the front row, but I want to be the best and I wanted pole," said Buurman, who was 0.183s ahead of Dolby at the second sector split time.

"I had the speed to do it, so I'm a bit disappointed. With four corners to go, my rear brakes started locking. That made me run wide on two occasions, which was enough to ruin my lap time."

Dolby, who instead claimed his first-ever Superleague pole, said: "This is wicked. I've never been a strong qualifier in Superleague, but I've been working hard on it.

"Finally, everything has come together for me, and we've got a pole. So let's go racing tomorrow and see what happens."

FC Basel's Max Wissel, who will start fourth tomorrow, confirmed that a suspected engine failure ruined his semi-final attempt.

"The oil pressure was going up and down, up and down," he said. "They told me to stop. Maybe the engine is broken. I had a look at the back of it, and it seemed okay, but now the team will find out."
