Van der Zande tops first GP3 session
Renger van der Zande finished on top in the first ever official session for the new GP3 Series at the Circuit de Catalunya today
The Mucke driver bumped ART's Esteban Gutierrez from the top of the timesheets 10 minutes into the session and was never troubled thereafter, finishing with a best time of 1m38.664s. His Mucke team-mate Nigel Melker was second, 0.203s in arrears, ahead of Gutierrez and Status driver Robert Wickens, who made a late surge up to fourth.
Addax's Mirko Bortolotti was among the early pace-setters, but the Italian earned the unfortunate distinction of being the first driver to crash a GP3 car on a race weekend when he spun and tagged the barriers with 10 minutes remaining.
His time was still good enough to keep him in seventh behind Manor duo James Jakes and Adrian Quaife-Hobbs.
