Late deal saves Vasiliauskas's F2 place

Kazim Vasiliauskas will race in the Formula 2 season-opener at Silverstone this weekend, after looking unlikely to return to the championship when his primary sponsor pulled out last week

The Lithuanian was expected to be one of the title favourites this year after winning a race in his rookie season in 2009. But his sponsorship shortfall meant he was unable to take part in the pre-season testing at Snetterton last week and at Silverstone on Monday, and would have been unable to race.

But a late deal with a new investor has guaranteed his place on the grid, at least for the beginning of the season.

"It has been a very hard week," said Vasiliauskas. "I was told that our main sponsor was no longer able to invest and I thought it was all over for me this season - it was difficult to take.

"Fortunately, my team has been able to find some new investment and I am really happy to be back on the Formula 2 grid. Of course, it is a slight disadvantage that I didn't attend the tests but I know Silverstone, the F2 car and the operation so I am confident I can be quick.

"I have two practice sessions on Friday to get back into it and this weekend is a big motivation for me."
