Indy must retain identity - de Ferran

Gil de Ferran claims it is critical for the IndyCar Series to choose a next generation of chassis that retains the 'true nature' of American single-seater racing

IndyCar is planning to introduce a new car for the 2012 season and several different design proposals have been submitted.

Chip Ganassi Racing's Ben Bowlby unveiled his radical DeltaWing concept last week, while existing chassis supplier Dallara, and former Champ Car constructors Lola and Swift, have also revealed alternative options.

Double Champ Car champion and 2003 Indianapolis 500 winner de Ferran, who will return to the series this season as co-owner of newly merged team Luzco Dragon Racing/de Ferran Motorsports said: "I think it's important that whatever decision is made, IndyCar retains what I believe is its true nature.

"The cars have always been the fastest cars on the planet. In many ways IndyCar was the original extreme sport. The cars were known as the fastest cars and I think that has to be part of the future direction of IndyCar.

"I've been keeping somewhat of a distance, but the DeltaWing certainly looks like a radical concept - a great departure from what we are used to seeing.

"There are some interesting aspects to it, but there are also interesting aspects to all the other proposals. I look forward to seeing what the final decision is."
