Weather hampers Schumacher again

Michael Schumacher declared himself happy with progress on the second day of his GP2 test - even though poor weather conditions continued to interrupt his running at Jerez

The returning Formula 1 world champion is taking part in the three-day test with the GP2 Series development car to prepare for his comeback with Mercedes GP, as the F1 testing restrictions mean he cannot drive a contemporary grand prix car until February.

Rain affected Jerez again today, with the track never sufficiently dry for absolutely competitive times and the session having to be halted an hour early, but Schumacher felt it had been a much more productive day than Tuesday.

"We made a big step forward today as we were able to drive for around 90 per cent of the time in the dry which was an improvement on the track conditions from yesterday," he said.

"We achieved two long runs which went very well and provided consistent data for the GP2 guys to evaluate. The forecast looks even better for tomorrow so we can look forward to a good final day."

GP2 technical chief Didier Perrin said Schumacher had already made a huge contribution to the championship's development efforts.

"Thanks to Michael's impressive feedback we now have the technical orientations for the rear suspension," he said.

"Hopefully tomorrow's weather will allow us to add more long runs to our programme, and give us even more information for the next car."
