Grapevine: Alonso enjoys hometown F1 demo

Fernando Alonso was greeted by a crowd of 170,000 fans when he took to the streets of his hometown Oviedo in his 2008 Renault Formula 1 car on Saturday

The event in the northern Spanish city was the latest of Renault's successful roadshow events. Although the team has held several such demonstrations in Spain, this was the first time that one had taken place in Alonso's own town.

The double world champion drove a variety of Renault road cars before performing a display for the crowd with last season's R28 chassis.

"It has been a beautiful day and a dream come true for me," said Alonso. "I have to say a big 'thank you' to the government of Oviedo and also to Renault for allowing me to have a Roadshow in my home city.

"Oviedo should be very proud of this event because less than twenty cities have had the opportunity to see a Formula 1 car on their streets.

"I was pleased to see so many fans come along and watch the show and I hope that everybody enjoyed the event. I think this was the perfect way to reward my supporters and to show the people of Oviedo the excitement of Formula 1."

It was also announced during the event that a street in Oviedo is to be named after Alonso.
