Briscoe cautious over title chances

Ryan Briscoe remains cautious about his IndyCar championship lead, despite heading into the final two races of the year with a 25-point advantage over Dario Franchitti

The Australian extended his lead with a narrow victory over reigning champion Scott Dixon at Chicago on Sunday, but is well aware that one slip-up could let either Ganassi driver back into the fray.

"We've seen how quickly [the championship lead] can turn around," said Briscoe - pointing to the fact that the position has changed hands after 13 of the 15 races held so far. I just have to stay focused and try to beat these guys - Japan and Homestead, they're going to be tough races.

"I sort of got myself into a little bit of trouble [falling down the order after a slow pitstop at Chicago] and we've got to try to avoid those instances, run consistently, stay at the front and we'll see what we can do."

Franchitti insists that he can still win the title: "Obviously we're still in the fight for the championship, but Ryan did another good job and we're going to have to make something happen these next two races."

Dixon was frustrated to lose out on victory at Chicago by just 0.007s and admits he's running out of time to regain his crown.

"It's frustrating," said Dixon. "I was thinking maybe for a lap or two that we just might be able to do it. But for the majority of the night, if it came down to that shootout, I think we definitely knew we were going to lose.

"It's getting pretty old, so hopefully we can turn it around at some point."
