Heidfeld confident of staying in F1

Nick Heidfeld says he is confident about his chances of racing in Formula 1 next season, despite BMW announcing its departure from the sport the end of 2009

The 32-year-old German, who has started 160 grands prix, was out of contract at the end of this season anyway and says he was exploring his options before news of BMW's withdrawal.

"I feel as confident as before [about securing a drive for 2010]," said Heidfeld. "It was not certain that I would be with BMW next year, so I was already in talks with other teams before the decision was made public.

"Of course, that has become more intensive now over the last couple of weeks and yes, I am confident for the future."

Heidfeld has been with BMW since 2005, having previously driven for Jordan, Sauber and Prost.

When asked how close he is to a deal with another team, he said: "It is always difficult to say how close you are. We are in talks with several teams and I think it is looking good."
