BMW vows to keep on pushing in 2009

BMW Sauber boss Mario Theissen says his team will continue to push with the development of this year's car in order to avoid the same errors in 2010

The team started the season with the goal of fighting for the championships, but has instead found itself struggling to score points on a regular basis.

BMW is currently in eighth position after having managed eight points in nine races.

Despite that, Theissen insists it's in the team's best interest to continue pushing this year to learn about the car's problems

"[There's] two reasons [to continue pushing]: number one the aero regulations don't change so what you learn, and apparently we have a lot to learn because we are lagging behind, can be used for next year as well," Theissen said.

"Number two, the race weekend is the only weekend to test something out on the track so it would be silly to give up this opportunity and just work out on the track."

When asked what the goal for the remained of the season is, Theissen added: "To close the gap. Now it is about performance, not about certain positions."

Theissen admitted the team's performance has been "insufficient" this year, but said the BMW board understood the difficulties of succeeding in F1.

"It is understanding and they are as disappointed and impatient as I am," he said. "But they know it is a sport, and you have to cope with this. By the way, in normal car business it is the same - you always have to cope with a setback. So it is not so unusual."

Theissen, whose team finished in third place in last year's champion hip, said he was still unsure about the reasons for its struggles.

"I don't know. It is a mix of impact factors. We were just discussing the tyre situation which is really strange, day to day, car to car, same drivers, same car and once it works and then it doesn't."
