Hamilton tops final practice in Germany

Lewis Hamilton raised hopes that McLaren's resurgence might be under way by topping practice for a second consecutive session at the Nurburgring

Hamilton emerged on top at the end of the early long runs - leading the field by a full second at one point - and then went quicker still when everyone switched to soft tyres for the final runs.

The world champion was even able to sit out the final minutes in the pits, and watch his 1m31.121s time remain unbeaten.

Fernando Alonso took second place for Renault, 0.219s behind Hamilton, despite a quick spin in the arena section on his last lap.

Felipe Massa repeated his Friday morning third place in the Ferrari, ahead of Red Bull duo Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber, and his Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen.

Championship leader Brawn had a troubled session. Jenson Button was only 11th, and complained over the radio of difficulty with low tyre temperatures and locking front brakes.

His team-mate Rubens Barrichello spent the first half of the hour in the pits while an electrical problem was attended to, before emerging to take 14th.
