Q & A with Nico Rosberg

AUTOSPORT catches up with Nico Rosberg after a very encouraging British Grand Prix

Q. How encouraged were you by the pace of the car at Silverstone?

Nico Rosberg: I'm pleased, yes. As a team this was our most horrible track in the past years. We were absolutely disastrous there as it was a pure aero track, with engine power and aero efficiency important. We brought an update to the car, and it really bought it forward. So I have to say a big compliment to the whole Williams team - the aero department included.

It is nice to see that in the past years we have been dropping back, and this year we are outperforming teams like Ferrari in development. So that is really nice to see, especially with the budget that we have it is fantastic. It really represents a lot of efficiency and good management and everything. We are now fifth in the Constructors' Championship, beating McLaren, and it should put us in a good position to attack Ferrari who are still in front of us if we have some good races.

Q. With the development progress you've seen over the course of the season, there is no reason why it should tail off is there?

NR: I think it will carry on, yes. The team is doing a great job and there is no reason why it should not carry on that way. We will keep pushing forward and I think there is no reason why we should not be on for a podium soon - why not?

Q. Is money a problem at Williams?

NR: Not at all.

Q. Is the performance at Silverstone more than you expected?

NR: Oh, yes. A lot more. I was expecting to be good, but I was concerned because it had been a disastrous track for us in the past. We've done really, really well. We were very, very quick and that is promising.

Q. How satisfying is it seeing the rate of progress that Williams is making?

NR: It is very satisfying yes. In the last couple of races we have been developing strongest out of everybody - maybe apart from Red Bull who are making big progress - which is very nice to see. It makes me happy also to know that. There was a little bit of a worry that as the season goes on, we didn't really make the most of the beginning of the season - we weren't far off but we could have done better, and perhaps missed our opportunity to do something special. But it looks like we will have many more chances.

Q. Does the progress at Williams make it harder for you to make a decision about your future?

NR: It is massively hard at the moment. The team is doing so well, and I feel comfortable in the team also obviously. It is a nice team to be part of, and they deserve it also. It is nice to get some results. It is good.

Q. How has Kazuki Nakajima come on this year? There were some comments from Sam Michael last week suggesting that he was closer to you now than he was last season?

NR: I think he is coming on well. At Silverstone he was as close as he has been to me, maybe a tenth or so from me, and it is good to see. It is what the team needs, and it is also good for me. On Friday [at Silverstone] I was slower, and thanks to him we worked a lot to see what he was doing at some places, and I took over some of the things he was doing. That made me do a good step forward, which was important. Technically that was important.

Q. So driving style wise you are very close?

NR: I think so, yes, quite close. Definitely, yes.

Q. Is it frustrating to be one of the best teams, but never the best one at the front over a whole weekend?

NR: I think that is a little bit of a misconception, because we are nowhere near close to being the best team. We are always within four or five tenths of the best team, being Brawn or Red Bull, and there was also Toyota and Ferrari ahead of us. So we were the fourth or fifth best team.

It is not frustrating, no. I am even pleased that, if you compare to last year, the progress we have done is nice to see. I think we are progressing well now too, and I think we can move up to become the third best team. I think we are very close to that at the moment - to beat Toyota. We were close to beating them in Turkey, before our upgrade and when they had their upgrade, so I think we are actually quicker than them now - especially on a track like Silverstone.

Q. Knowing what the strengths of the Williams are, what are the tracks coming up that should suit it particularly well?

NR: We are quick on every track - it doesn't matter if it is street circuit or aero high-speed circuits like Silverstone. We are quick everywhere.
