Enge thrilled with his 'best Le Mans'

Tomas Enge has said that finishing fourth at Le Mans in Aston Martin Racing's LMP1 car is as good as a victory for him in the first year of the team's project

Enge, who shared the #007 Lola Aston Martin with Stefan Mucke and Jan Charouz, believes the AMR team achieved the best result it could hope for as the best petrol-powered car as well as the highest-placed non-factory car.

"This is my best result at Le Mans, I have to say it is like a win for me," Enge told AUTOSPORT. "So many times I was leading the GT1 class, every year, and then we had technical problems or other issues and I ended up second, third or a non-finish.

"This is really great because what we achieved the most was the consistency on our car and no technical issues. The other cars had problems but we had none."

Enge admitted that the Aston team knew they would not be able to challenge Audi or Peugeot, but was pleased with fourth place given the timeframe the team had to prepare for the event.

"We're very happy that we can be the fastest petrol car as well, it's a great achievement for the first year in this class. We knew ahead of the race that we could not challenge the diesels, so we just wanted to have a clean race without any problems and we were just waiting for what was going to happen to them, and what were the positions.

"We had a really short time for preparation, the whole programme started very late. We had a few major accidents as well and it ended up with the accident just before the race on our car. But everybody put tremendous effort, putting the car together, to be able to be fast and to finish the race."
