Sarrazin: #8 Peugeot can still win

Le Mans pole-sitter Stephane Sarrazin insists that the #8 Peugeot is still in with a chance of victory, despite losing the lead of the race with reliability problems on Saturday evening

The #8 car led the first five hours of the race before it was forced to pit for repairs to a loose disc-bell. It fell to sixth place, one lap down, but Sebastien Bourdais charged back up to third in his multiple stint.

Bourdais lost more time when he needed a new nosecone after making contact with a backmarker, but the #8 has been the fastest car on the track throughout the night and has worked its way back onto the lead lap, and up to second place, ahead of the #1 Audi.

Sarrazin, who has just handed it back to Bourdais, is encouraged that the car is running strongly now and believes victory is still possible for the #8 crew.

"We had some problems a few ago but we have no problems now," he told AUTOSPORT. "There are still many hours to go so anything can happen.

"We are very happy to be back ahead of the #1 Audi now. We will keep pushing and take what we can."

The #8 car is steadily closing the gap to the leading #9 car, but Sarrazin played down the chances of two Peugeots fighting head-to-head if they have a comfortable lead over the first Audi.

When asked about the likelihood of fighting with the #9 908, Sarrazin said: "The plan is just for a Peugeot to win, so we will see."
