Stoner: Points lead means nothing

Casey Stoner says the championship lead he opened up by winning the last round at Mugello means nothing, heading into this weekend's Catalan GP

The Ducati rider beat Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi to the top spot in Italy and now lies four points clear of Lorenzo and nine ahead of Rossi, but he is adamant that the advantage will not affect his approach at Barcelona.

"Being leader of the championship at this stage means absolutely nothing," Stoner said.

"My rivals are very clever, mature and capable of winning races so we have to stay focused and do our best to be competing for the top step of the podium again. If that's not possible, then make sure we are bringing home the maximum number of points.

"This championship is extremely difficult and competitive, and even a victory like the one at Mugello, wonderful as it was, needs to be put behind us so that we can turn our focus to the next race."

Stoner has a good record at Barcelona, having won the race in his title year in 2007 and finished third behind Dani Pedrosa and Rossi in 2008.
