Logano thankful for fans' vote

NASCAR Sprint Cup rookie Joey Logano was pleased with his eighth place finish in Sunday's All-Star race after qualifying through the fans' vote

Logano had failed to make the race during the Sprint Showdown, which he finished in fifth place, but fans voted for him to take the last slot in the main event.

The 18-year-old moved from last on the grid to finish 11th in the first segment, then dropped to 15th in the second and 14th on the third. In the last 10 laps of the main event he was able to move up six spots, one of the biggest movers of the final sprint.

"I've got to really thank the fans on that one," Logano said after his first ever All-Star race. "For a rookie to come in and get the fan vote right off the bat was very surprising, there were a lot of big names in that race to get the vote. I've got to thank everyone out there, that was really big.

"In the first race I thought we were okay. We did a couple things to the car that I learned there, Zippy [Greg Zipadelli, crew chief] learned a couple things that we can work on for the next race and just kept getting better. We finished fifth there I think and once we started the big race we started going to the front, I thought.

"That was the most fun I've had in a Cup race so far that's for sure. It's cool how it's 50 [laps] and 20, 20 and 10. It's different but I enjoyed it."

Logano currently leads the Rookie of the Year standings, ahead of former Formula 1 racer Scott Speed.
