Valles takes Jerez pole for Liverpool

Liverpool's Adrian Valles beat AS Roma's Franck Perera to pole position in a battle of European footballing heavyweights at Jerez

Perera was quickest in the group stages, and semi-final, but Valles pulled it off when it mattered. And with championship leader Davide Rigon enduring a nightmare qualifying, pole position breathes fresh hope into Liverpool's faint Superleague title chances.

Rigon's Beijing Guoan car will line up on the final row of the grid after the Italian went off on his first flying lap of group qualifying, ending his day in the gravel.

However while Rigon's incident is a boost for Liverpool, it appears to be game over for PSV, the only other title challengers, as Yelmur Buurman failed to make it out of the group stages and will start tomorrow's first race from the midfeld.

Harry Redknapp's Midas touch may have reinvigorated Spurs' football form, but it has failed to have an impact on the club's Superleague fortunes, with Duncan Tappy bumped out of a place in the quarter-finals in the dying seconds of the group stage by Sevilla's Borja Garica.

Ryan Dalziel looked liked giving Rangers their first appearance in the knock-out rounds, but he too suffered at the hands of the Spaniard's late improvement.

Andy Soucek of Atletico Madrid and Porto's Tristan Gommendy were the losing semi-finalists and will fill the second row tomorrow.
