GPDA convinced Singapore will be safe

Grand Prix Drivers' Association (GPDA) chairman Pedro de la Rosa has played down safety fears about rain affecting this weekend's Singapore Grand Prix

Although some drivers have expressed concerns about the safety implications of Formula One's first ever night race on a new street circuit, where there is a high likelihood of rain, de la Rosa says he is sure the FIA has everything under control.

And despite conceding that the prospects of rain at night are a slight worry, he does not think it will make the racing more dangerous than it is at any other race.

Speaking to as preparations continue at the Marina Bay circuit ahead of this weekend's first race around the streets of Singapore, de la Rosa said the GPDA is totally happy with what F1 race director Charlie Whiting said the race organisers have done.

"The bottom line is, if it's not raining we are 100 per cent sure that it will be fine," said de la Rosa. "There will be no issues.

"People talk a lot about the tunnel at Monaco, but when you are driving you don't even notice it. If it rains, we don't know, because no one has tried it. But if we have enough light, then it should act in the same way as if it's raining in daylight. I don't see it being dangerous."

There was heavy rain in Singapore this morning, but with evening approaching the skies are just overcast.

Jarno Trulli has been a leading voice in expressing his own worries about the Singapore situation, and the fact that there will be no running at the track until first practice gets underway at dusk on Friday.

However, de la Rosa thinks the information updates that have been provided by Whiting have eased some of these worries - and thinks the drivers will quickly adapt to the new challenges at the track.

"As the GPDA, we have not expressed our concerns because we are quite comfortable with it," he said. "I think it's a great idea, we just have to adapt to it. There will be more in the future, so we have to make sure we get it right.

"This is the first one and we are not sure what we will find, but the information that Charlie has given to us is very positive, so we don't see any problems. I'm sure the second race will be better, but as a start, this should be fine."
