Glock not convinced about wet SC start

Timo Glock is not convinced that a safety car start would be the best option if this afternoon's Italian Grand Prix gets underway in wet conditions

The Toyota driver, who will start ninth on the grid, believes that although the cars would be more spread out compared to a normal standing start, the higher speeds the cars would be carrying into the first chicane increase the chances of an accident.

"Even with a safety car start there could be a big crash at the first corner," he said. "You come down quicker to Turn 1 from behind a safety car than from a standing start, but it's the decision of [race director] Charlie Whiting.

"It's difficult to say what is the right way, but when you are at Monza behind the safety car and you have a flying start, you come down to Turn 1 quicker and that makes it even more tricky.

Glock is also concerned that starting from a midfield position in the wet will make visibility very low in the early stages. The German believes that he could have made it into the top five in qualifying, which would have made it far easier to see in the race.

"There is a good chance for points for me, but in P9 in a wet race is it's difficult to see anything," he said. "We are still in the middle of the pack and the problem will be in the race if it's wet like this to have a clear view will be difficult.

"It's one of the really difficult circuits in the wet because when you are in the race and you have a couple of cars in front of you with all the spray coming up, it just stays in the air.

"We had a good chance to be in the top five but strategy-wise I think we went a different way to everyone else. After free practice three and qualifying one and two we had quite a good feeling, but we just went in a different direction to everyone else.

"It wasn't the perfect qualifying. In the last run in qualifying three especially I struggled quite a lot to get the tyres up to temperature. It was really tricky."
