Peugeot sweep Nurburgring front row
Audi's challenge to Peugeot faded in qualifying at the Nurburgring as the two 908s took a clean sweep of the front row for tomorrow's 1000km race
Marc Gene clinched pole position for the No.7 car, just two hundredths of a second faster than Pedro Lamy's best effort in the No.8.
The two Peugeots were nearly a second and a half clear of their nearest challenger, which was not an Audi but the Lola Aston Martin as Stefan Mucke pipped the first R10 by three hundredths of a second.
The Audis qualified fourth and fifth with Alexandre Premat edging out teammate Dindo Capello by half a tenth to put the No.2 car ahead.
Olivier Panis put the Courage-Oreca sixth, ahead of Jos Verstappen who was seventh in the Van Merksteijn Porsche, first of the LMP2 cars.
The LMP2 class is set for a good battle with the Team Essex car with Casper Elgaard qualifying just half a second behind Verstappen.
Tomas Enge claimed the GT1 pole for Aston Martin, over a second quicker than Olivier Beretta in the first of the Corvettes. There was only half a tenth between the two Chevrolets, though, with Guillaume Moreau right on his teammate's tail.
The Farnbacher Ferrari contiuned its good form from practice to take pole in the GT2 class, but it set for a fierce fight with three Porsches less than three tenths behind. The Felbermayr, IMSA, Farnbacher Porsches should ensure a closely contested scrap, although the next Ferraris, both JMB cars, are a second further back.
The Virgo Motorsport Ferrari 430 faces a race against time to make tomorrow's race after a fire in practice this morning. The car didn't make it out in today's qualifying session, but the team hope to have it ready for the race.
