Alonso not ruling out victory in 2008

Fernando Alonso says he is not ruling out winning a race this season despite Renault's disappointing start to the year

The two-time champion, rejoining the team with whom he won his titles after a year at McLaren, has scored just nine points in the first seven races of the season.

In Canada, however, the Spaniard was fighting near the top and claimed he could have won the race if not for a strategic error.

Alonso said he is not yet thinking about his future, and is instead focused on improving his situation in the championship and maybe get a few podiums or a win.

"At the moment all my focus and my concentration is on this year, I don't want to finish the season with only nine points and with no podiums," Alonso told a news conference after Friday practice.

"I definitely want to be on the podium this year, and hopefully not only one time, and hopefully maybe we have a chance to win a race.

"In Canada we were close, with a little bit of luck maybe you can win one race and I am ready to fight for it."

The Spaniard admitted he is determined to help Renault fight for fourth place in the standings, despite the French squad being currently in seventh.

"In the constructors' championship, which is more important this year because I am not fighting for the drivers' championship, I want to help the team to finish at least in fourth place," he said.

Alonso did not rule out scoring his first podium of the season in this weekend's race, after finishing on top of the times in Friday's afternoon session.

"Maybe the podium possibility is not too far but we need some luck probably and to have a very good qualifying tomorrow," he added.

"Our normal race will be fourth or fifth with Hamilton probably behind us...we need to take the points and we are ready to take them."
