Vettel looking forward to racing STR3
Sebastian Vettel is adamant Scuderia Toro Rosso are doing the right thing in introducing their new car in Monaco - despite the track's difficult nature
Following an encouraging first day of testing with the STR3 at Paul Ricard in France this week, Vettel is optimistic about the step forward his team can expect - and totally supportive of not delaying the car's introduction any further.
Monaco's tight and twisty nature, with an increased likelihood of accidents, means that there will be a gamble for the team that were forced to delay the planned debut of the STR3 from Turkey because of a lack of spare parts.
"It's true there is not much room, but we have been waiting for this car," said Vettel when asked about the dangers of introducing a new car in Monaco.
"I am looking forward to it. Monaco, people might say is not so clever, and it is right that Monaco is perhaps not the perfect place to introduce a new car. But if you never start running or working with the new car, you never get used to it - so it can only be an advantage."
Vettel spent his early evaluation of the STR3 on just getting mileage on the car rather than experimenting with setup or finding its limit.
That is why he will be happy for now simply seeing Toro Rosso do a good error-free job in Monaco.
"The target is always the same for us. For races like Monaco, where a lot can happen, you never know. But the target is always to do 100 percent the job we can do with no mistakes. It has not been that case in the last couple of races, because in Turkey we had an error with the fuel rig. So there is a lot to do."
When asked if he felt the car had enough to get Toro Rosso into Q3, he said: "You never know. It depends on the others. Maybe five guys have a bad day. Our target must always be to have a good day with no excuse.
"We are here to win ultimately, but first we fight against ourselves and if we can do that then we can be proud."
