Cheng tops final practice at Brands

China's Congfu Cheng set the fastest time in the final free practice session for the A1GP finale at Brands Hatch on Saturday

'Franky' enjoyed a session-long battle for supremacy with Team Great Britain's Robbie Kerr, who eventually ended up second fastest.

Indeed the Kent circuit specialist was briefly top towards the end of the hour, before Cheng improved his own time.

Cheng, whose car was fitted with a new Zytek engine on Friday, put his speed down to his enthusiasm for Brands Hatch: "This is one of the best circuits in the world, it's a fantastic place," he said.

"We completed all the programmes we wanted to in practice three and I am confident of the car's pace on old tyres as well as new ones," he added.

Ex-Formula One driver Narain Karthikeyan was third on the timesheet for Team India, ahead of New Zealand's Jonny Reid and Switzerland's Neel Jani.

The Swiss driver, who leads the championship, was lucky not to be facing a busy lunch break ahead of qualifying after he miraculously missed the barriers at Stirlings. Jani's car went off track, across the gravel, and along the grass verge, but was not damaged.

Indonesia's Khalil Beschir also ran into the gravel, while James Hinchcliffe spun the Canadian car at Paddock Hill bend.
