Speed takes maiden ARCA win

Former Formula One driver Scott Speed scored his maiden ARCA RE/MAX Series on Friday at Kansas Speedway in only his seventh stock car start

The Red Bull racer had started from the front row and led the first 16 laps before hitting trouble. His window net came loose and he was forced to pit under green, dropping a lap down on the new leaders.

He went back on the lead lap on a caution period and fought his way back to the front, passing fellow rookie Jason Smith on a restart with six laps remaining and then holding off Ricky Stenhouse Jr to take his maiden ARCA win.

"It's certainly great to win a race," Speed said. "It's been a while but at the end of the day the most important thing is that we learned something because the goal is to be successful in (Sprint) Cup and this is a step toward that."

"Every lap I make on the track right now is beneficial. That's why we're doing so many races, why we're pushing so hard because this is where I'm learning the most."

Speed has moved up to fourth in the ARCA RE/MAX standings and he will be racing Saturday at the 1.5-mile oval in the Craftsman Truck Series, driving the No. 22 Toyota for Bill Davis Racing.

The American had not won a race since 2004 when he was competing in Formula Renault.
