Briatore: Renault will be close to BMW

The French squad have failed to show the kind of pace necessary to run near the front in the first three races of the season, but they are hopeful of a better showing at the start of the European season.

Several updates have been introduced in the R28 car, and although Briatore is not expecting a miracle, he thinks the team should be able to escape the midfield group and get close to BMW.

The German team are currently leading the championship after three podiums in three races.

Speaking in Madrid during a press conference in Mutua Madrilena's headquarters, Briatore said he expects Fernando Alonso to make the difference and allow Renault to fight closer to the sharp end of the field.

"It's always good to think big. If the car works as we think, it will be behind BMW, but more or less at their level," the Italian was quoted as saying by AS newspaper.

"And then Fernando will make the difference. Now we need to change our mentality to improve.

"I hope the result in Montmelo is important for all. Fernando will do everything possible and impossible to get it. I'd be very happy with a podium.

"We don't think we are going to get pole in Barcelona. The important things is to show signs of improvement. If a driver sees the car is improving, his confidence grows. We are hoping to improve not only in Barcelona, but also in Turkey, Monaco..

"We have seen in the test that the car is better, and if don't make a big jump we'll make a small one."

Briatore said he believes Alonso, two times champion with Renault, is in better form than ever before.

"Fernando is working in an incredible way with the car. He is working with the mechanics, with the engineers," he added.

"I think he's better than ever. He's matured a lot. And working together I'm sure we'll move forward."
