Porsche given weight break
Porsche have been handed a weight break to bring them closer to GT2 rival Ferrari ahead of the opening FIA GT round of the season at Silverstone this weekend
The 911 GT3-RSR hasn't measured up to Ferrari's 430GT in recent times and is outnumbered three to one in the GT2 field this year. The 2008-specification car has been given a 30kg weight break in an attempt to bring the two cars closer together.
The Porsche will still be heavier than the Ferrari because it runs to a higher weight limit as it has wider tyres and more power than its class rival.
The FIA Bureau have handed Porsche the break as their plan to create a level playing field has extended to GT2, as well at GT1. They have also said there may be more changes after Silverstone.
Andrew Kirkaldy, team boss and driver of Ferrari outfit CR Scuderia, was surprised that action was taken before the start of the season.
"We didn't believe the FIA were going to do anything before Silverstone because they hadn't seen either car in race trim yet," he told this week's Autosport.
