Theissen not getting carried away

BMW motorsport boss Mario Theissen has said he will wait until after the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona to judge how strong a challenge his team can make this season

Although the form from the last two races suggests that BMW Sauber could now be Ferrari's main threat for title glory, Theissen is wary of getting too carried away at the moment.

He believes the car updates that every team will introduce in Barcelona will give a much clearer picture of the performance of the top three teams, and he especially thinks those who are writing McLaren off now are wrong to do so.

"The next race in Barcelona will be pretty interesting for two reasons," said Theissen, whose team are leading the constructors' championship.

"The track is very relevant to what we see for the rest of the year, and on the other hand, every team will have a development package for Barcelona. So after Barcelona we will be able to say where we really are."

When asked if he saw the fight for wins and the title perhaps being just a two-way battle between his team and Ferrari, with McLaren having dropped away, Theissen said: "I don't think so.

"If we look at the past three races, not one team has performed perfectly at all of them. In Bahrain, McLaren-Mercedes were not up to their real performance. Barcelona has always been a McLaren track, so let's wait and see what happens there.

"This weekend we have clearly been quicker than McLaren, so I would rather say it's a fight between three top teams. It depends on the track or on the form you have at the weekend as to who is first."

And Theissen is adamant his team cannot feel too satisfied with even leading the constructors' championship, because their target remains to win a race.

"It doesn't change our plan because that is still to win our first race this year, and we haven't achieved that so far."
