Briton Sam Bird set the quickest time in the two-day Formula 3 Euro Series test at Estoril this week.
The best laptimes of the session were set during the morning session yesterday, when Bird (Manor Motorsport) edged out Nico Hulkenberg (ART) by just 0.051 seconds.
"Of course it's great to be fast, but the main thing is the work we're doing on the car to get it sorted for Hockenheim," Bird told autosport.com.
"It's going to be really tough this year, the level of competition is unbelievable - there are 20 guys out there that are really fast. Hopefully our form will carry on, but we haven't got to the important bit yet."
F3 rookie Mika Maki (Mucke Motorsport) was third quickest, ahead of James Jakes (ART), with Tom Dillman (SG Formula), who set the best time on the first day of the test, finishing up fifth.
The best-placed Volkswagen driver was Maxi Gotz (RC Motorsport), who set the quickest time in the final session yesterday afternoon but high winds meant that session was slower than the earlier one and his time put him seventh overall.
