Carroll gives Ireland maiden victory

Adam Carroll pulled off a stunning victory for Team Ireland in the feature race in Mexico City on Sunday, combining a virtuoso drive with brilliant pitstops from his Status-run squad

The race had looked destined for Team Switzerland's Neel Jani, but a safety car negated his massive early lead. He was ultimately undone in the pits, when he pulled out alongside Carroll, who gained a massive amount of time in both pitstops.

Jani stayed in the slow lane, alongside Carroll in the fast lane, when he should have given way and tucked in behind the Irishman.

Jani received a drive-through penalty, which dropped him out of the points. It also gave Carroll clear passage to victory, to score a famous win over Oliver Jarvis (Great Britain), who held off a stern challenge from Team USA's Jonathan Summerton in the closing laps.

Jeroen Bleekemolen finished fourth for the Netherlands, from 13th on the grid, ahead of pole-man Robert Wickens, whose Canada car just didn't have to pace to run at the front. He was lucky to survive an assault from Germany's Michael Ammermuller.

Adrian Zaugg finished sixth for South Africa, just ahead of Portugal's Felipe Albuquerque.

The championship battle stayed the same at the front, as both Jani and New Zealand's Jonny Reid finished out of the points. Reid went off the at the chicane, and dropped to the tail of the pack. He remains 15 points behind with four races remaining.
