Night race gets green light for 2008

The opening round of the 2008 MotoGP season has been given the go-ahead to take place at night after a successful test at the circuit on Monday

Five MotoGP riders took part in a test under the floodlights at the Losail circuit in Qatar, and all were in favour of the race being run at night on March 9.

"The difference from when we first tested here at night is amazing," said Loris Capirossi. "Back then I wasn't sure if it was possible, but the lighting out there is perfect.

"There's hardly any difference between day and night riding in these conditions, and of course it's going to be more exciting to race at night.

"There's no problems with shadows or reflections, I'm very happy with this. I can't wait for the whole circuit to be illuminated."

Capirossi joined Marco Melandri, Anthony West, Andrea Dovizioso, and reigning World Superbike champion James Toseland at the test, where they were all riding road bikes, as their MotoGP machines are on their way to Sepang for the next winter test.

The organisers even simulated a power cut, which was automatically rectified by back-up systems as planned.

Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta added: "This is a landmark moment for our sport, and we would like to thank everyone for bringing this project to this stage.

"We can now confirm that next year's race will take place under floodlights, and we hope it will be a successful event."
