BMW unafraid to disrupt title battle
BMW Sauber will have no qualms about fighting with the title contenders at the Brazilian Grand Prix this weekend, even though doing so could play a decisive role in the outcome of the world championship
Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica have been McLaren and Ferrari's closest challengers this season, and should they get their cars between the title hopefuls then it could decide the outcome of the championship.
Lewis Hamilton, for example could, lose the championship if Heidfeld or Kubica get their cars between himself and teammate Alonso.
BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen has vowed that his team will not deliberately try and influence the championship outcome, but he said they will not hold back in the fight for positions.
"Of course, if we can get between the top four cars we will do that," said Theissen. "We are fighting here for a good result in order to finish an excellent season on a high, and there is no reason to stay away from the top positions.
"We will just go as fast as we can. There won't be any tactical issues. We will certainly not interfere with the fight for the championship, but we will try to get the best results we can."
BMW Sauber have made modifications to their hydraulic systems in the wake of the problems that hit both Heidfeld and Kubica at the Chinese Grand Prix.
"It was two different problems," he explained. "In fact, it was hydraulic leaks in two different areas. We took all the parts back to Munich on the Sunday night (after China) by hand luggage and we were able to understand the problems quite quickly.
"We understand what happened, but we don't understand why it didn't happen in the 16 races before! But we were able to fix it obviously."
