Dorna proposes single tyre rule for '08

MotoGP rights holder Dorna has proposed that the series switches to a single tyre supplier for the 2008 season

The idea was put forward at today's Grand Prix Commission meeting at Motegi, and a decision is promised by next month's Malaysian Grand Prix.

"We have made a proposal in the Grand Prix Commission meeting today to reach an agreement between all the different tyre manufacturers for the use of tyres in 2008, owing to the situation in which some factories believe that they can't have tyres which they think are competitive," Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta told the official MotoGP website.

"We thought that the best possibility is to go to a one-tyre rule."

Ezpeleta said the change to control tyres was not yet a certainty, but that a solution must be decided upon within the next four weeks.

"This is only an initial proposal," he said. "If the situation is not resolved by Malaysia then all relevant parties - the FIM, IRTA and MSMA - will reflect on the situation and during the Grand Prix weekend will make their final decision."

The tyre situation had been a source of great debate in recent months as Michelin struggled to match Bridgestone during the summer, and Bridgestone's dominance was held responsible for a series of uninspiring races.

But Michelin rebounded to win at Estoril last week, and its riders have taken the top three positions in qualifying at Motegi today.

Ezpeleta's announcement comes a day after the Repsol Honda team announced that it wanted to switch from Michelin to Bridgestone for 2008 - only for Bridgestone to declare just hours later that it had already told the factory Honda squad that it could not supply them next year.
