Zanardi angry about penalty
Alessandro Zanardi has expressed his frustration at the penalty he has been handed after the first lap accident at Oschersleben two weeks ago
Zanardi was given a 10-place grid penalty for the next four races, after officials decided that he was responsible for causing the multiple car accident in Germany.
However, the Italian has since reviewed the television footage of the accident himself, and he has also put still frames which he believes prove his innocence on his website.
"I have been recognized guilty for this contact by the FIA stewards. As a result of that they gave me an unprecedented penalty of a ten places drop-back for the starting grid of the next four races," Zanardi said.
"Because of the movements of the cars surrounding us, from the video played at normal speed you get the perception that my car is rapidly moving towards the left side.
"After viewing the images at slow speed kindly provided to me from Eurosport, with the appropriated technology, which couldn't be done at the race track, my sense of frustration for the decision is pushing me to not make any further comments."
The accident was triggered when Zanardi and Nicola Larini made contact on the run to the first corner, although Larini said afterwards that he felt it was a racing incident.
"With Alex, we haven't had the slightest spat or discussion about it," Larini was quoted as saying by Italian magazine Autosprint. "In any case, I agree it should have been classified as a racing incident."
