Red Bull to help Speed into NASCAR

Red Bull's Helmut Marko has said former Toro Rosso driver Scott Speed would be supported by the energy drinks company to move into NASCAR

Speed, who has been a Red Bull driver since he entered the US Red Bull Driver search programme in 2003, left Scuderia Toro Rosso last month following an altercation with former boss Franz Tost in the European Grand Prix.

Marko, who has been in charge of Red Bull driver's programme, said Speed could end up racing in NASCAR, where Red Bull has their own Nextel Cup team, currently fielding two Toyota Camrys for Brian Vickers and former Champ Car star AJ Allmendinger.

"We are still trying to co-operate with him, but in a different area," Marko told the SpeedTV website.

"NASCAR is a very special form of racing, and even a guy like Montoya, with all his F1 experience and his Champ Car racing on ovals, can't just jump in and be competitive.

"So, they will look maybe at some Busch races and if that is going well, put him up to the Nextel Cup."

Red Bull's Nextel Cup team have had a difficult debut season, working with Toyota, as the Japanese car manufacturer made its entry into NASCAR's top-level series this year as well.

In 23 races to date, Vickers has qualified for 14 events, while Allmendinger has only made the field eight times. They currently rank 39th and 47th in the driver standings with the team's best finish thus far being a fifth place from Vickers in the Coca-Cola 600.
